Fire Propagation Characteristics and Fire Risks of Polyurethanes: Effects of Material Type (Foam & Board) and Added Flame Retardant

Polyurethane material is used as an interior finish and wall cavity insulation. Flame-retardant products may be for ignition, flame diffusion, heat-release blocking. A large-scale test was conducted to understand the propagation characteristics of polyurethane with addition a retardant. The fire properties risks four commonly materials were examined using three tests. Specifically, ignition properties, behavior, flashover occurrence probed full-scale tests, while heat release cone calorimeter toxicity gaseous combustion assessed gas PIR F B, which contained retardants, featured slow long-lasting residual flame, released HCl Br2 on combustion. Full-scale tests revealed that although external always accompanied by flashover, irrespective whether retardant present, delay or blockage energy transfer inside observed flame-retardant-containing specimens.
